존경하는 시카고 동포 여러분께.

지금 우리가 거주하고 있는 미대륙, 불과 2백여년전 만해도 자유와 미래의 희망을 찾아온 개척자들이 무리를 지어 종횡무진하던 이 광활한 대륙, 하나님의 축복을 받은 이땅에, 비록 뒤늣게 도착하였지만 우리 또한 이민 보따리 하나들고 이 낯선 땅으로 오직 자유와 기회를 찾는 개척자의 정신으로 뛰어든 이민 길 또한 그들과 다를게 무엇이 있겠습니까?

저는 시카고에 32년동안 거주해 온 심 지로 웅섭 임니다. 시카고의 한인이민역사도 어언 60년, 피땀어린 노력에 힘입어 이제는 괄목할만한 성장으로 확고한 정착의 기반을 다져 왔습니다. 한인 2세들은 주류 사회에 진출하기 시작 하였고 한인 사회는 여타 소수 민족들의 본보기가 되어 많은 관심을 받고 있읍니다.

그간 이민 선배님들의 선견지명으로 한인 문화회관의 필요성을 절실히 인식하고 시작된 문화회관 건립 사업이 우여곡절 속에서도 동포님들의 적극적 참여로 187만불이 모였습니다. 이제는 우리의 숙원인 문화회관 건립이 현실로 다가오고 있습니다. 2009 기축년의 벽두에 우리 모두 십시일반으로 조그마한 정성들을 모아 협력하여 건립할 때 진정한 문화회관이 의미를 발휘하고 자손대대로 우리민족의 긍지를 계승시키는 초석을 마련해줌은 우리들의 임무라고 생각합니다..

이번 6월 7일부터 7월28일 까지 52일간 San Francisco, California의 태평양 바닷물에 뒷바퀴를 적시고 13개주를 관통하며 3,850마일을 달려서 Portsmouth, New Hampshire로가서 앞바퀴를 대서양 바닷물에 적시는 미대륙횡단, America by Bicycle 에 당신을 초대합니다. 우리는 아직 이민자, 아니 개척자로서 원대한 꿈을 품고 현실에 끊임없이 도전하는 한 방법으로 그 옛 개척자들의 심경을 되새기면서 광활한 대륙을 두바퀴 자전거로 하루평균 80+마일을 비, 바람, 폭염속의 가파른 산길, 끝없는 듯한 사막, 평원을 달려가면서 초기 개척자들의 여정을 체험함으로써 후배들에게 건전한 도전 정신을 길러주고 이민자가 헤쳐온 피땀흘린 과거들을 인식시켜줌은 가치있는 일이 아닐까요?

물론 많은 분들이 한번 도전 해보고 싶은 의욕과 체력은 있어도 일상의 잡다한 이유로 동참할수 없는 분이 많으시겠죠. 그러나 방법은 있습니다. 제가 여러분들의 염원과 꿈을 받아 고이 간직하고 가겠습니다. 어떠한 어려움도 이겨내고 동포님들의 염원을 성취시키기 위하여 꼭 완주하겠습니다. 대신 여러분들은 제 이름으로 한인 문화회관 건립 기금모금에 동참하여 주시면 됩니다. 물론 세법이 허용하는 자선단체 기부금에대한 혜택도 받으시고요. 이번 계기를 통해서 우리 시카고 동포사회에 벽돌쌓기 운동같은 모금운동이 다시 부활되는 계기가 되기를 기원합니다. 아마도 한인으로는 최초의 자전거 대륙횡단, 일생에 한번 올수있는 경험을 형제 자매님들과 함께하고 싶습니다. 여지껏 미루어 오셨던 문화회관 건립 사업참여를 더이상 방관치 마시고 이번기회에 물심양면으로 적극 후원 해주시기를 간곡히 부탁하렵니다.

이번 모금액 목표는 $30,000.00이고. 3월16일 현재 27명이 $9,286을 약정하셨습니다. 이번 여정의 경비는 약$10,000.00이나 자비로 충당하고 여러분이 보내주시는 성금은 100% 문화회관 건립기금으로 쓰겠습니다. 제 준비 일정상 3월31일까지 1차모금액을 보고하기로 계획하고 있으니 협조 해주시면 감사하겠습니다.

Dear friends.

This great nation, the United States of America was explored by the pioneers, settlers, dream seekers, just over 2 centuries ago.

Poets and sages have long offered the advice: follow your dreams. Dreams reveal your true direction in life, they said. Unfortunately, we usually don't seize the opportunity to pursue our dreams.

I have lived in the United States of America, for 32 years as a Chicagoan, Shim, Zero -- I'm very involved in the Korean community and surrounded by friends and family. What more could I want? I want to pursue my dreams. What is my dream?

To ride my bicycle across the United States--to accept the physical challenge of crossing the country under my own power while experiencing the beauty and vastness of America. I’ll be imagining those pioneers’ foot steps, all over the continent who were seeking freedom and opportunity from a new land.

We as Korean American 1^st generation immigrants are no different than those of pioneers. We’re late comers but have been in Chicago for 60 years already. We had the same ideas and expectations of freedom and opportunity as the ancestors of this great country. I would like to remind our younger generation of the pioneers’ sprit through this event. I feel it is truly my duty.

On June 6, 2009, I'll dip the back of my bicycle into the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco, California. On July 28, 2009, 52 days and 3,850 miles later, I will dip the front wheels of that same bicycle into the Atlantic Ocean at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

During our bike trek across America, I will have averaged approximately 80 miles of cycling per day, through rain, snow, heat, mountains, desert plains, headwinds, traffic, and tedium. This adventure is more than just a bike ride. America by Bicycle is particularly special to me because it will not only fulfill my dream, but will give others and the next generation a chance to follow their dreams too--which is why I have decided to do it.

Our elders had foreseen the future and dreamed to build cultural center because of the importance of its function. Passing on their traditions to younger generation is vital to the survival of any ethnic group and communicating with other ethnic group in our community is the best way to co-exist in our society. This cultural center will not only nurture our tradition but also share it with many other ethnic groups’ heritage to learn from each other. It is the best way to keep peace in the community and this center is long overdue. It has been many years since the Korean community start to raise funds to build the Cultural Center. Despite some disagreement within our community, we have raised $1.87 million so far. This great dream is very close to becoming a reality. It is most meaningful if more people are participating for this good cause.

I would like to invite you to be part of the experience of a lifetime. Not by pedaling (though you'd certainly be welcome), but by sponsoring me. I will carry your dream with me and complete this journey to the end, overcoming all the challenges and difficulties. I will do my best to be worthy of your support.

I'll be raising funds for the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCoC). My fundraising goal is $30,000. Your contribution is tax deductible. Enclosed please find a pledge form and a self-addressed envelope. I look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will share this adventure with me.

By March 30th, I like to report my supporter’s pledges and turn in at least $10,000. As of 3/16/09, 27 people have pledged $9,286. I would like to make one thing crystal clear. No funds raised will go to defray my expenses. I am paying in on my own which is about $10,000.
